President, Nova Harvest Ltd.
In 2011, J.P. Hastey founded Nova Harvest Ltd., a company dedicated to applying innovative, science-based solutions to support the development of a sustainable shellfish industry. Nova Harvest’s hatchery, located in Bamfield, BC, is a leading supplier of high-quality oyster, geoduck, and Manila clam seed. With a BA in Biology, a Master’s degree in Animal Science, and recognition as one of Hatchery International’s Top 10 Under 40, Hastey has been able to apply every aspect of his education to develop and sustain the Nova Harvest enterprise. Mostly self-taught through experiential learning, he epitomizes the innovative leader, ensuring that creative problem-solving is combined with integrity and attention to detail. After spending the first 10 years focused on improving hatchery production, J.P. is now dedicated to the continued development of West Coast shellfish farming operations through Mariculture LP, a limited partnership with the Huu-ay-aht Group of Businesses, and the expansion of Port Alberni-based processing capacity for the adoption of high-pressure processing technology for shellfish and the development of new retail products.
J.P. has been a full-time resident of Bamfield for 14 years and is highly involved in the local community. He currently serves as a board member of the Bamfield Community Affairs, Bamfield Community Forest Society, Bamfield Advisory Planning Commission, and Bamfield Water Commission, and he is the president of the Bamfield Community Hall Society. In addition to his significant involvement in the Bamfield community, J.P. is also an active member of the shellfish industry, serving as a volunteer board member of the British Columbia Shellfish Growers Association and the DFO Shellfish Aquaculture Management Advisory Committee (AMAC).
